You Were Expecting Statehood?

I thought that Ferguson made some very interesting points in this article, and I thought that his comparison of 1940's Poland to modern-day Palestine was very clever. As the famous quote goes, history always repeats itself. What are your opinions on the postwar action taken by the League of Nations regarding Poland and other disputed areas? Did Roosevelt's vision of a "world parliament" have any validity, or was it simply a hopeless dream? Should the decisions of the League of Nations have been left to Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt, or should these leaders have let other countries have a say? Lastly, what are your thoughts on the future of Palestine. Do they deserve statehood or would they abuse their power?

  1. I think that its possible that Palestine could become a member of the United Nations, but first they have to prove that they are trustworthy and dedicated towards the UN's mission, peace. I don't think that the decisions of the League of Nations should have been left to those leaders. Every country should have had a say in the League of Nations. I see Roosevelt's vision of a "world parliament" as a hopeless dream, because there will never be true equality. There will always be some countries with more influences than others.

  2. I agree with what Isabel has said. The idea of "world parliament" is a huge hope, but nothing will come of it. There will always be people apposed to ideas. C.J. said it well, "a hopeless dream." With the decisions of the League of Nations Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt should have been the only ones. If you think about it if they let other countries have a say, then they would get no where. Sure they would have other voices, but thats the drawback so many different opinions would make everything even more difficult.

  3. I agree with Isabel and Maggie when they said that Roosevelt's "World Parlement" idea was just a dream, and will never become true. It is impossible in my mind that there will will be an equal world, there will always be dominate world powers.
I agree with Maggie, if all the world powers were equal in the League of Nations, than it would be much harder to get things done.
I think that Palestine will get statehood, but not anytime soon. There are too many people aposed to it.

  4. I completely agree that Roosevelt's idea was too good to be true and even somewhat childish. After he had just led his country through one of the largest wars in history, how could he believe that the entire world could come together and make decisions? Although they caused controversy, the ideas ideas of Stalin and and Churchill were far more realistic. Also, I think Palestine will achieve statehood eventually; however, this could lead to major controversy or even a war, which the U.S. would be forced into due to their alliance with Israel.

  5. I agree with what Sean said about Palestine getting statehood. Although this is the right thing to do there are too many people apposed to the idea. If they do get statehood it won't been soon. I also agree with CJ. Although Roosevelts idea was great, how could he see the world come together after such a huge affair. Not only that, but how could he see the world come together and make decisions.

  6. Good point Midge, in my first comment I talked about how it will never actually be equal, but I hadn't thought about how if they are equal, it would be hard to make any decisions. Not only would they have to make sure that no countries would influence each other, they would also have to make sure that no country would have a bigger say than another. By the way happy birthday tomorrow!
